The Stupid Ads Work

Atmosphere TV wanted a testimonial, but the goal was to elevate it beyond the typical format. The opportunity came from an unexpected place. My son’s pediatric dentist was already using Atmosphere, with teens watching while in the chair. A truly captive audience and a compelling story for advertisers.

In speaking with the team, we realized the story was not just about the product, but about the person who brought it in. The marketing manager who made the decision became the center of the piece. Courtney had a distinct voice that felt fun, quirky, and completely authentic.

As soon as she said, “the stupid ads work,” I knew that was the spot. It was honest, a little irreverent, and exactly how real people talk. It took some convincing to get everyone comfortable with leading that way, but it became the anchor for the entire piece.

I also pushed to feature the TVs on the ceiling. It is a small detail, but it reinforces the reality of the experience and makes the setting feel specific and memorable. The rotoscope of the dentist light revealing the TV above the chair was a must-have moment for me. It was a bit of a lift to execute, but it added a layer of craft and perspective that made the scene land.

I directed the film to feel more like a brand story than a traditional testimonial, leaning into her personality while naturally showing the role Atmosphere plays in the space.

This is the longer web version of the piece. A :45 preroll cutdown was created for broader distribution.

The result is a testimonial that feels human and specific, while still carrying a premium brand sensibility.
